Z-Hacek Characters Do Not Display Properly

SYMPTOMS

When you press ALT+0142 or ALT+0158 to display the Z-Hacek or z-Hacek characters, a square box may be displayed on the screen.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you use a program that uses the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) table to display the Hacek characters.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use a program such as Microsoft Word that does not use the GDI table to display the Hacek characters. For additional information about how your program uses the GDI table, contact the manufacturer of your program.

The Western (1252) code page does not use the correct code in the GDI table for the Z-Hacek (U+017d) and z-Hacek (U+017e) characters. You may experience the behavior described in the Symptoms section of this article if you use any of the following programs:
