Cannot Install Virtual Private Networking

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Virtual Private Networking (VPN) by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be continuously prompted for the location of the drivers. For example, the Copying Files dialog box is displayed, you select the location of your drivers, you click OK, and then you are prompted for the driver location again.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you select all of the unselected tools and programs on the Windows Setup tab in the Add/Remove Programs tool, and you then try to install all of the tools and programs at one time.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the tools and programs on the Windows Setup tab individually.

To work around this issue, remove and reinstall VPN:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, click Details, click to clear the Virtual Private Networking check box, click OK, click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.


  3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  4. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, click Details, click to select the Virtual Private Networking check box, click OK, click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.
