Dfs Support in Windows 98 Hangs the Client for Microsoft Networks

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect your Windows 98-based computer to a Microsoft Windows NT-based server with Microsoft dstributed file system (Dfs) installed, the Windows 98 protect-mode redirector (Vredir.vxd) may stop responding. Also, network connectivity may be unavailable.


CAUSE

This problem can occur because an internal counter used by VRedir was decremented, causing Vredir.vxd to interpret that its connection resources were exhausted.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98.
