This article describes how to remove and reinstall Microsoft Fax with Windows Messaging, Microsoft Outlook 97, or Microsoft Outlook 98 Corporate Workgroup installations. Follow the steps for your version of Windows in sequence to successfully reinstall Microsoft Fax.
Record Properties of Current Services
Before you make changes to your computer settings, gather the information for each service installed:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Mail and Fax or Mail, click the first item in the The following information services are set up in the profile box, click Properties, and then write down the information. Follow this step for each service listed.
Modem Connection
Check to make sure that your modem is working properly. Use your connection to the Internet as a quick test to verify that your modem is working properly. If you do not have an Internet connection, run a diagnostics test:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Modems, and then verify that your modem is listed on the General tab.
- Click Diagnostics, click the COM port that you modem is attached to, and then click More Info.
NOTE: If the More Info dialog box appears without an error message and displays a series of "AT" commands and responses, the modem has passed a diagnostics test.

Remove Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging Components
To remove Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging components, follow the appropriate steps for your version of Windows:
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to clear the WordPad check box, click to clear the Imaging check box, and then click OK.
- Click the Install/Uninstall tab, click Windows Messaging or Exchange, click the Add/Remove button, and then follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program.
- Click Microsoft Fax, click the Add/Remove button, follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program, click OK, and then restart your computer.
Windows 95
- Right-click Recycle Bin on the desktop, click Empty Recycle Bin, and then click Yes.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to clear the WordPad check box, click to clear the Imaging check box, and then click OK.
- Click to clear the Microsoft Fax check box, click to clear the Windows Messaging or Exchange check box, click OK, and then restart your computer.
Remove Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging Files
After you have removed the programs as described in the steps above, the remaining files must be removed:
- Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
- At the MS-DOS prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
deltree /y forms
exit
- After your computer restarts, verify that you have the "Show All Files" option enabled. For information about how to enable the "Show All Files" option, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- After you verify that the "Show All Files" option is enabled, rename the files listed below to an .xxx extension. Note that after you have successfully reinstalled and tested Microsoft Fax, you can delete these renamed files. For information about how to rename files, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type renaming, and then double-click the "Renaming Files" topic.

Install Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, click Details, click to select the WordPad check box, click to select the Imaging check box, click OK, and then click OK.
- Insert your Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Click Browse This CD, and then locate the following folder:
Tools\OldWin95\Message\US
- Double-click the Wms.exe program file, follow the instructions on the screen to install Windows Messaging, remove the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
- Place your Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Click Browse This CD, and then locate the following folder:
Tools\OldWin95\Message\US
- Double-click the Awfax.exe program file, follow the instructions on the screen to install Microsoft Fax, and then restart your computer.
Window 95
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, click to select the Microsoft Fax check box (you may receive a message about installing Windows Messaging, Imaging, and WordPad), click OK, and then restart your computer.
- Double-click Recycle Bin on the desktop, and then click Select All on the Edit menu.
- Click click Restore on the File menu, click No to file replacement messages, and then click Close in the upper-right corner of the Recycle Bin dialog box.
Install Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging with Outlook 97 or 98
NOTE: If you install Outlook 98 Internet Mail Only, Microsoft Fax may be replaced with WinFax. For additional information about Outlook 98 and Microsoft Fax, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To install Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 Corporate Workgroup:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the program you want to install, and then click Add/Remove.
- Follow the directions and choose to reinstall components, click OK, and then restart your computer.
Verify Installed Services
For the Microsoft Fax program to work properly, the Personal Folders, Personal Address Book, and Microsoft Fax services must be installed. To verify that these services are installed, check the Mail and Fax or Mail tool in Control Panel:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Mail and Fax or Mail. If the Inbox wizard runs, click Microsoft Fax Service, and then click OK.
NOTE: If there is a Microsoft Mail system that you connect to, click Microsoft Mail and configure it according to the notes you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section at the beginning of this article.
- Click Personal Address Book, click Properties, browse to the location of the .pab file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click Open, and then click OK.
- Click Personal Folders, click Properties, browse to the location of the .pst file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click Open, and then click OK.
If the Personal Folders, Personal Address Book, and Microsoft Fax services are missing, add each service:
- Click Add, click Personal Folders, and then click OK.
- Browse to the .pst file that you wrote down in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click the .pst file, click Open, and then click OK.
- Click Add, click Personal Address Book, and then click OK.
- Browse to the .pab file that you wrote down according in the "Record Properties of Current Services" section of this article, click the .pab file, click Open, and then click OK.
- Click Add, click Microsoft Fax, and then click OK.
