Windows 98 Second Edition Hangs on Compaq Presario Notebook

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition or install Internet Explorer 5 on a Compaq computer that uses a Cyrix Media GX processor, your computer may randomly stop responding (hang), especially when you are connected to the Internet.


CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Cyrix Media GX processor is not on the Windows 98 hardware compatibility list.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall Windows 98 or use the Compaq Restore CD-ROM to restore the computer to the original configuration. The third-party products discussed in this article are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Note that this problem is resolved in Internet Explorer version 5.01.
