SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition, you are no longer able to run Microsoft Internet Explorer using Internet Explorer 4.0 Compatibility mode.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows 98 Second Edition does not retain the Internet Explorer 4.0 Compatibility mode setting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run the Iesqrl.exe tool in the Internet Explorer - 4 Compatible folder to re-enable the Compatibility mode feature. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

  2. Type cd\, and then press ENTER.

  3. Type the following command (with the quotation marks), and then press ENTER:
    cd "program files\internet explorer - 4 compatible"

  4. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    iesqrl /3

  5. Type exit, and then press ENTER to return to Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98 Second Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Internet Explorer 5 on Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, you can install Compatibility mode if you have already installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 on your computer.
