Cannot Map a Network Connection to a Local Shared Resource

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to map a network connection to a shared network resource, you may receive the following error message

The following error occurred while trying to connect
<drive> to \\<computername>\<sharename>

The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again.
where <drive> is the selected drive letter, <computername> is the name of the computer you are connecting to, and <sharename> is the name of the shared resource.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you attempt to map a network connection to a shared network resource on your local computer.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use the local drive on your computer to gain access to the shared resource.


STATUS

This behavior is by design.
