Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 2 Requests Disk During Installation

ID: Q244349

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 2, you may receive the following prompt:

Insert Disk:
The disk labeled 'Y2K Update 2' is now required. This disk is provided by your computer manufacturer. Click OK to continue.
When you click OK, the following dialog box is opened:
Copying Files...
The file filename on Y2K Update 2 could not be found.
Insert Y2K Update 2 into the drive selected below, and click OK.
The Copy files from box in this dialog box displays a path similar to
C:\Windows\Temp\Ixp000.tmp
or another temporary folder with a name such as Ixp00x.tmp, where x is a number.

CAUSE

Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 2 Setup is a self-extracting file that contains another self-extracting file that runs concurrently with the Year 2000 Update 2 installation. Both files create temporary folders that are deleted after Setup is finished. On certain computers, the temporary folders are incorrectly identified by one of the Setup programs, which searches in the wrong temporary folders for the Setup files.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior:

  1. Click the Browse button in the Copying Files dialog box. This opens an Open dialog box.

  2. Under the Folders window, click the temporary folder. This displays a list of folders with .tmp extensions. If there is more than one, click them in order until you find the file displayed in the File Name dialog box.

  3. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem is more likely to occur on slower computers with small amounts of random access memory (RAM). In particular, this problem may occur when you are installing Windows 98 Year 2000 Update 2 from the Microsoft Year 2000 Update CD-ROM on a computer with a slow CD-ROM drive.
