Computer Hangs Using Some Versions of the E100bnt.sys Driver File

SYMPTOMS
When your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer with Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) support enabled has been idle for the amount of time needed to enter Standby mode, your computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
This issue can occur under the following conditions:
- You installed Windows 98 Second Edition with the "/p j" parameter on a computer that provides ACPI support.
- Both the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Microsoft NetBEUI protocols are bound to an Intel network adapter that uses the E100bnt.sys driver. Some versions of this file can generate this behavior.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, contact Intel to inquire about the availability of an updated driver.
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
Use a Different Network Adapter or one that Does Not Use the E100bnt.sys File
If you do not know how to use a different network adapter or one that does not use the E100bnt.sys file, contact your network administrator for further assistance.
Remove or Do Not Bind NetBEUI or TCP/IP to the Network Adapter
To remove one of the protocols
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
- Click the appropriate protocol, click Remove and then click OK.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
To unbind one of the protocols from the network adapter
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and double-click Network.
- Click the network adapter, click Properties, and then click the Bindings tab.
- Click to unbind the appropriate protocol, click OK and click OK.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
Replace the E100bnt.sys with the Version of this File on Windows 98 (Not Windows 98 Second Edition)
To replace the driver:
- Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, click Run, type sfc, and then click OK.
- Click Extract one file from installation disk.
- Type e100bnt.sys, and then click Start.
- In the Restore from box, type drive:\Win98 where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
- In the Save file in box, type c:\windows\system, and then click OK.
- Click OK when the file has been successfully extracted and then click Close.
