Resuming While Docked Hangs During Dock Change Notification

ID: Q247177

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you "hot undock," suspend, and then dock your laptop computer, when the computer resumes it may stop responding (hang) while the Dock Change message is displayed if no Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is available to respond to the DHCP Discover requests.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by a timing issue in the DHCP code that allows multiple threads to modify the same data structure during an Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) resume and a Plug and Play dock change event. Typically, only one thread has access to the data structure at a time.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.
