Windows Help Does Not Open from the Start Menu

SYMPTOMS

When you click Help on the Start Menu in Windows, the Help program may not start. You may not receive an error message.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Hhctrl.ocx file is missing or damaged.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Extract a New Copy of the File

Use System File Checker to extract a new copy of the Hhctrl.ocx file from your Windows 98 CD-ROM into the C:\Windows\System folder.

Download and Install the Latest Hhctrl.ocx File

To download and install the latest Hhctrl.ocx file:
  1. In Internet Explorer, open the following Microsoft Web site:


  2. http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/htmlhelp/localize.asp
  3. On the Web page, click English under the x86 column.


  4. When you are prompted, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.


  5. In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.


  6. Click OK when the file has been downloaded.


  7. On the Windows desktop, double-click Hhupd.exe.


  8. When you are prompted with Do you wish to update HTML Help?, click Yes, and then click OK.
