SYMPTOMSWhen you attempt to reinstall the upgrade version of Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 over an existing version of Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, you may receive one of the following error messages:
If you insert a Windows NT CD-ROM from a previous version of Windows NT, you can install Windows NT version 4.0 to a new folder, but you cannot reinstall over the existing installation of Windows NT version 4.0. CAUSEThe Windows NT version 4.0 Upgrade Setup checks for Microsoft Windows NT versions 3.1, 3.5, and 3.51. Setup does not recognize Windows NT version 4.0 as a version of Windows NT that can be upgraded. RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, upgrade using the full retail version of
Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
