How to Determine the Currently Logged on User with Windows NT 4.0

SUMMARY

Under Windows NT Server version 3.x, the title bar of Program Manager could be used to determine the name of the currently logged on user. This information is not immediately available with the Windows NT Server 4.0 shell, but you can obtain it by using one of the techniques given in the MORE INFORMATION section of this article.

To find the name of the currently logged on user, do any one of the following:

Method I

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.


  2. Type progman.exe and press ENTER.


The logged-on user will be displayed in the title bar in the syntax of %domainname%\%username%.

Method II

While logged on, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys simultaneously. The name of the currently logged-on user is given in the Logon Information section of the Windows NT Security dialog box.

Method III

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.


  2. Type winmsd.exe and press ENTER.


  3. Click the Network tab. You can see the current user and logon domain information. Note that Winmsd.exe also displays the domain controller that authenticated the client computer within the domain.
