Bugcheck in Windows NT While Running POSIX Applications

SYMPTOMS

A bugcheck occurs while running a POSIX application that forks many times and calls exec() API from the forked processes.


CAUSE

An API used for freeing virtual memory was not handling fork prototype page table entries (PTE) correctly.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 U.S. Service Pack. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
