Unable to Open Large Files in WordPad

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a large file (approximately 16 MB in size or larger) in Wordpad, Task Manager may show 100 percent CPU usage and WordPad may also show Not Responding. Wordpad might also display a status of "0% Opened.

CAUSE

This is caused by a limitation in the Word6 file format.

RESOLUTION

Save the file in .rtf format, or use a more robust application such as Microsoft Word to open the file. If a failure still occurs, the file may be corrupt.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post additional information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
