Screensaver Password Works Even if Account Is Locked Out

SYMPTOMS

If account lockout option and password protected screen saver are enabled and the user tries to get past the screen saver password unsuccessfully, it increments the account lockout counter. Numerous bad attempts should result in the domain account being locked out. The problem is that the screen saver password does not check to see if the account is locked out. So, if the account lockout counter is set to five bad attempts before locking the account, the screen saver lets the user in if a correct password is entered even after five bad attempts.


CAUSE

This problem is because of a problem in Msgina.dll in Windows NT.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" online Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To install the fix:

  1. Run Regedt32.exe and add the following value to the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
    \Winlogon


    NOTE: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.

    Value Name: ForceUnlockLogon
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
    Date: 0x1


  2. Replace the Msgina.dll with the hotfix file.


  3. Restart the computer.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
