HP 870cxi Drivers Stop the Spooler Service

SYMPTOMS

The following event 7022 message is logged in the event viewer and all printers have disappeared from the printer list:

Event 7022: The TCP/IP Print Server service hung on starting.
The Services tool in Control Panel indicates that the Spooler service has stopped.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the HP DeskJet 870cxi drivers were installed from the driver disk provided by HP.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, perform the following steps:

  1. Remove the HP drivers and printer device installed with the installation disk provided by HP.


  2. Download Nt4dsk2.exe from the following URL:

    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/mslfiles


  3. Install the HP DeskJet 870cxi printer using these drivers.


  4. Verify the operation of the printer by performing a test print.


NOTE: When you are inflating the Nt4dsk2.exe file, you must use the -d switch to inflate the folders also. If you do not use this switch, you receive an "Unable to install due to conflict with the architecture" error message. The command is:
nt4dsk2 -d
