SYMPTOMSWindows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 introduces a new feature in Nbtstat.exe. When you run the NBTSTAT -RR command at a command prompt, the names of the WINS client can be re-registered in the WINS database. This feature does not correctly increment the version IDs of these registered names. CAUSEThis behavior occurs because the WINS client did not wait for a response to the release request before sending the refresh request to the WINS server. RESOLUTIONA supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but
it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems
experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this
specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack
that contains this fix. http://www.microsoft.com/support/supportnet/overview/overview.aspTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual software update. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:
-or- http://www.microsoft.com/support/supportnet/overview/overview.asp STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6. MORE INFORMATION
This would only be an issue if NBTSTAT -RR is used to solve a problem where a registration exists in some WINS servers but not in others. Q188598 Renewing Wins Client Registrations with NBTSTAT -RR Additional query words:
