AppleTalk Does Not Always Respond to ZIP Queries

ID: Q229098

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

A computer running Windows NT Server 4.0 acting as an AppleTalk zone router may not reply to a ZIP query from an AppleTalk client on the local LAN.
This manifests itself on the Macintosh client as an incomplete or empty lists of resources (for example, printers) being returned when querying for resources on the network.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the AppleTalk stack only replies to a ZIP query if the network address supplied in the query matched the first network address in the range supported by the local zone.

To work properly, the AppleTalk stack needs to reply if the network address is any valid address within the whole range supported by the zone.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual software update. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:

For information on obtaining the individual software update, contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, define zones to consist of only one network address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.
