Multithreaded Write Routine May Cause Data Corruption on FAT Partition

SYMPTOMS

When multiple threads are asynchronously writing to non-overlapping parts of a file, immediately after another thread extends the file, part of the file can become corrupted with zeros. This only occurs when the file is on a FAT file system.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.
