Access Violation in Mpr.dll During Startup

SYMPTOMS

When you start a computer with a large number of services installed, an access violation may occur in Mpr.dll during the boot procedure because of a lack of heap memory.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Mpr.dll does not allocate memory for a control block. In such a case, Mpr.dll tries to free the control block with an incorrect pointer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the individual software update. For information on obtaining the latest service pack, please go to:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.
