Server Comment Set with SNMP Is Not Retained After Restart

SYMPTOMS

If you set a server comment using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), the string you set lasts only until you restart the computer or you restart the Server service.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Server service is not properly preserving the server comment in the registry when you use SNMP to set the comment.


RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.

You can set the server comment for the Server service by using SNMP. The object identification (OID) is .1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.2.1.0. You can use the Snmputil.exe tool from the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit to set or view the value.
