IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
topic in Regedt32.exe.
SUMMARY
When a user first logs on to a computer running Windows NT and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 is installed, Internet Explorer 5 creates personalized settings for that user. These are settings for Outlook Express, Windows Address Book, Internet Connection Wizard, and so forth.
The personalized settings routine runs for a new user, even though the default user profile may be customized as desired and the settings do not need to be changed.
MORE INFORMATION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency
Repair Disk (ERD).
To prevent the personalized settings from being created:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedit).
- From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:
Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components
- On the Edit menu, click Find. Type in "STUBPATH" (without quotes), and then click Find Next.
- Delete the string value named StubPath. Be sure to delete the StubPath value located in the Installed Components section of the registry only.
- Continue this procedure until all values named StubPath are deleted from the Installed Components section of the registry.
- Close the Registry Editor.
Care should be taken to leave the Installed Components registry key and all of the other values underneath Installed Components. Deleting the Installed Components registry key may lead to problems with other programs.
