Cluster Node with Heavy Disk Stress Does Not Shut Down Properly

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to restart a node of a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Cluster Server that is subjected to a large amount of disk activity, the computer running Windows NT 4.0 may not shut down properly. As a result, the entire cluster server may stop responding (hang).


CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the cluster network driver in NDIS needs to be updated to work with the shutdown operation.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.


MORE INFORMATION

This behavior can occur on both multi-processor and single processor computers and is not dependent on the computer's available resources (disk space or memory).
