Event Log Error 1106: The SNMP Service Is Ignoring Extension Agent DLL Winnt\System32\W3pmib.dll

ID: Q241813

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

The following error message may be logged in the Event log:

Event log error:
Event ID: 1106 - Source: SNMP
The SNMP service is ignoring extension agent dll winnt\system32\w3pmib.dll because the file missing or incorrectly configured.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the SNMP service tries to load the W3pmib.dll dynamic-link library (DLL), but cannot because the World Wide Web service (W3svc) has not yet started. The W3pmib.dll DLL requires the World Wide Web service (W3svc) to be running.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue, add the World Wide Web service (W3svc) to the Depend On Service list for SNMP:

  1. Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe, not Regedit.exe) to open the following key:

  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SNMP
  3. Double-click Depend on Service.

  4. Press ENTER to move to the next line (make sure that nothing is selected).

  5. Type W3SVC. Do not press ENTER.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Restart the computer.
