GP Fault Using Internet Explorer with Thread Local Storage 1.0 Enabled and HTTPS

ID: Q241864

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition version 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

You may receive "general protection fault" (GP fault) error messages when you visit a secure Web site using thread local storage (TLS) 1.0 security. Note that Internet Explorer does not enable TLS 1.0 security by default.

CAUSE

The TLS protocol causes the server to send a list of trusted client Certificate Authorities (CAs) to the client. In this case, the size of the list is larger than the software can handle.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q152734 How to Obtain the Latest Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine if TLS 1.0 is enabled, click Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, and then click the Advanced tab.
