System Policy on Windows 95 Client Not Implemented

ID: Q245075

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to log on to a Microsoft Windows NT-based network from a client computer running Microsoft Windows 95, the system policy on the client computer may not take effect.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the system policy on the client computer does not exist in the Netlogon share of the domain controllers, or if the client computer is not configured to use customized settings.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. At the Windows 95-based client computer, use System Policy Editor to create the system policy, and then save the policy file with a .pol extension.

  2. Copy the policy file to the Netlogon share of all domain controllers. The default location of the Netlogon share is the C:\Winnt\System32\Repl\Import\Scripts folder.

  3. Configure the client computer to use custom user preferences:

    1. In Control Panel, double-click Passwords.

    2. Click User Profiles.

    3. Click Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your personal settings whenever you log in, and then click OK.

    4. Restart the computer
