HOWTO: Viewing Non-Present Devices in the Device Manager

ID: Q245730

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000, version RC2

SUMMARY

Device Manager does not show non-present device by default even if you enable 'Show hidden devices" in the 'View' menu. To view non-present devices you must set the DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES environment variable to a non-zero value and then launch the Device Manager from the command prompt as shown below.

At a command prompt, type:

C:\>set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

Then type:

C:\>devmgmt.msc

Then, from Device Manager's "View" menu, select the "Show hidden devices" option.

If you always want the Device Manager to show non-present devices, you can set this as an environment variable via the "Environment Variables" dialog on the "Advanced" tab of the System property sheet in the Control Panel.
