Programs May Hang When Accessing Files from a File Server

ID: Q247178

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 SP5
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 SP5

SYMPTOMS

Programs (such as Microsoft Internet Information Server) may stop responding (hang) while they are attempting to gain access to files on a remote server.

CAUSE

The Windows NT Redirector (Rdr.sys) may hang threads while trying to close a file because of a problem in the cache manager. These threads wait for an event that never happens.

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack that contains this fix.
