"This File Is Not Meant for Browsing" Message Opening Help File

ID: Q190412

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Windows Help (.hlp) file, you may receive the following message:

This file is not meant for browsing

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you open a Help file that has been superceded by a compiled Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Help (.chm) file.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, open the .chm file instead of the .hlp file.

MORE INFORMATION

Earlier versions of Windows Help use the Winhlp32.exe program to display .hlp files. In Windows 98, .hlp files are used for context Help, pop-up definitions, and word definitions. Windows 98 Help files use a format called compiled HTML Help. Compiled HTML Help uses some Microsoft Internet Explorer components that provide navigational controls to find and sort information.
