BUG: Bidirectional Printer Not Recognized at Installation Time

ID: Q140657

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Win32 Device Driver Kit (DDK) for Windows NT, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When a bidirectional printer is plugged into a printer port such as LPT1, Windows 95 starts without recognizing it. This means that the Windows 95 Printer Wizard was never automatically invoked. An example of a printer that Windows 95 fails to recognize is the Xerox 4045 Laser printer.

CAUSE

There is a bug in the initial release of the Lptenum.vxd driver. Lptenum.vxd doesn't recognize device strings returned from the bidirectional printer that have spaces after the semicolon (;). The IEEE P1284 specification does allow spaces after the semicolon in the device string with which Lptenum.vxd should be compliant.

RESOLUTION

Manually install the printer by using the Control Panel Printers folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
