SYMPTOMSA hardware device inf file that installs correctly under Windows 95 (as well as OSR1) may not install correctly under OSR2. The OSR2 device installer creates a dialog box saying that the inf does not contain information about the device. CAUSEThe OSR2 device installer requires a match between the hardware ID in the inf file and the actual physical hardware ID created when the device is enumerated. Versions of Windows 95 prior to OSR2 did not require that the inf hardware ID match the physical hardware ID. RESOLUTIONTo find the correct value to use for the inf hardware ID, you can copy the device's physical hardware ID found in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum branch of the registry. You may see multiple hardware ID values, separated by commas, listed for the device. STATUSThis behavior is by design. REFERENCESSee the Windows 95 DDK for more information on hardware IDs and inf files.
