PRB: Problem with Splash Screen Logo While Preinstalling

ID: Q201915

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK), on platform(s):
    • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you brand the splash screen with a custom OEM logo, the logo might appear dithered and interspersed with colors that were not included in the original logo bitmap. This can occur even if you follow the size and color depth specification, as provided in the system builder users guide and the OPK Wizard Help.

CAUSE

There are two possible reasons for this behavior:

  • OEMSTAMP.exe determines the background color of the entire image by the first pixel in the bitmap. This technique is used to make a transparent overlay of the OEM logo on the startup screen logo. If the background color used in the upper-left and lower-left corners of the custom logo file does not closely resemble the background of the splash screen, dithering or scattering of colors in the custom logo might be noticeable.
  • The color palette that you use in the custom logo image must be the same as the default startup logo screen, however, you may use an additional six colors. The first six unique colors in the logo's color palette, excluding the background color, are merged into the startup screen logo. This can create problems when the custom bitmap contains certain colors.

RESOLUTION

To avoid background color problems, choose a background color for the OEM bitmap that follows these specifications:

Decimal Hex
RED value between: 158 - 164 0x9E - 0xA4
GREEN value between: 197 - 203 0xC5 - 0xCB
BLUE value between: 236 - 242 0xEC - 0xF2

To avoid color merging problems, do not use the color yellow (255,255,0) (ff,ff,0), or any derivative of yellow, as one of the first six unique colors of your palate

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

OEMSTAMP.exe patches the startup screen with the custom logo bitmap to create the final LOGO.sys. This program is automatically used if a custom logo file is included through the OPK Wizard Logo Information screen.
