BUG: Missing Speaker Icon After Installing WDM Audio Driver

SYMPTOMS

When you install a Windows Driver Model (WDM) audio driver on a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, the volume control icon may be missing from the taskbar.


CAUSE

This is a known problem with WDM audio drivers installed on Windows 98 Second Edition-based computers.


RESOLUTION

Use one of the following resolutions to cause the volume control icon to appear:

  • In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Multimedia. Click to select the Show volume control on the taskbar check box.


  • -or-

  • Restart the computer.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

When you install a WDM audio device on a Windows 98-based computer, a New Hardware Found dialog box is displayed and the required driver files are installed. However, although the audio device may function properly, the volume control icon is not present on the taskbar.
