Files with Umlauts Cannot be Seen on Shared NTFS Partition

ID: Q103923

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When displaying an NTFS or HPFS directory listing on a Windows NT Advanced Server across a network from a non-Windows NT computer, one with Windows for Workgroups installed for example, if any of the filenames contain umlauts, all of the files in the directory may not be listed. This problem does not occur on a FAT partition.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. On a Windows NT computer, use File Manager to share an NTFS partition containing approximately 150 files, including some that contain umlauts in the filenames.

  2. From a Windows for Workgroups computer on the same network, connect to that share.

  3. From the computer with Windows for Workgroups, delete some files (one by one) with File Manager. After a while, File Manager shows the wrong number of files in the directory.

  4. Press F5 and note that the files with umlauts are still not displayed.

  5. Close and restart File Manager. Note that the files still are not displayed.
