Embedded ATM Fonts May Stop 16-Bit Applications in Windows NT

ID: Q104020

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Under Windows NT, Adobe Type Manager (ATM) fonts embedded in a file may cause 16-bit Windows 3.0 or 3.1 applications, such as Photoshop, to stop (crash) when attempting to load them.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open Photoshop (or another application that supports EPS files).

  2. Open APERTURE.EPS (found in the tutorial folder of Photoshop) or open any EPS file that contains embedded ATM fonts.

Photoshop (or another application) may crash when attempting to load the file.

CAUSE

Because Adobe Type Manager does not currently work under Windows NT, ATM fonts embedded in a document may cause an application to crash.

RESOLUTION

Remove any embedded ATM fonts from the file or document using the 16-bit Windows 3.0 or 3.1 application or an application that can remove the fonts.
