PRB: 16-Bit App Launched from Service Always in Own VDM

ID: Q154115

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Win32 Application Programming Interface (API), used with:
    • Microsoft Windows NT versions 3.51, 4.0
    • Microsoft Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When a 16-bit Windows application is launched from a Windows NT service or from a 32-bit process that was launched from a service, the Windows application is always launched into its own separate VDM (Virtual DOS Machine). 16-bit applications launched by other 16-bit applications always run in the same VDM.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
