PRB: Certain Common Controls Fail If Internet Explorer Is Not Installed

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Win32 Application Programming Interface (API), on platform(s):

    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    • Microsoft Windows 2000, version beta 3


SYMPTOMS

The following may occur when certain common controls are used on a system that does not include Internet Explorer 3.x or later:

  • Certain common controls fail to function.


  • Applications that include the common controls generate page faults.


  • An "entry point not found in Comctl32.dll" error occurs.



CAUSE

The Pager, ComboBoxEx, Rebar, Date/Time Picker, Month/Calendar, and IP Address controls are not included in Comctl32.dll until version 4.70.


RESOLUTION

Comctl32.dll version 4.70 or later must be installed on the target system.


STATUS

This behavior is by design. Windows 2000 and Windows 98 included the listed controls and do not exhibit this behavior.
