BUG: IPHelper API Do Not Work Correctly After Installing IE 5.0 on Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After installing Internet Explorer (IE) 5.0 on a Windows 98 system an error code 50 appears:

ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED
The following is a list of APIs in the IPHelper API Set that return the prior error message.
  • GetAdaptersInfo
  • GetInterfaceInfo
  • GetNetworkParams
  • IPReleaseAddress
  • IPRenewAddress
The following 1003 error message appears:
ERROR_CAN_NOT_COMPLETE
The following is a list of a API in the IPHelper API Set that return the prior error.
  • GetBestInterface


CAUSE

The install of IE 5.0 replaces the iphlpapi.dll overwriting the original version 5.00.1717.2 with version 5.00.1952.1 on Windows 98.


RESOLUTION

This issue should be addressed with the Service Pack 1 release of IE 5.0.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
