BUG: System Crashes When Static IP Addressing is Used with Built-in Network Adapters

ID: Q232976

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows CE, version 2.1 Embedded ToolKit (ETK)

SYMPTOMS

A network is non functional when a static IP address is used in conjunction with a built-in network adapter.

CAUSE

If a network adapter is given a static IP address (rather than assigned by DHCP) then NetBIOS is told of the adapter before the NTE is completely created. This can cause a crash in NetBIOS.

RESOLUTION

The fix was to correctly wait for the adapter to be set up before indicating to NetBIOS as well as adding a check in NetBIOS to handle NULL adapters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The problem will not occur if Netbios.dll is not included. Not including Netbios.dll causes the network file system client to be non functional. There are no problems with installable (for example: PCMCIA) network adapters, or DHCP assigned addresses.
