PRB: CE Networking Fails when DHCP Server SwitchedNetworkFlag Enabled

ID: Q232999

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows CE OEM Adaptation Kit (OAK) 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows CE, version 2.01 Embedded ToolKit (ETK)
  • Microsoft Windows CE 2.10 Enhancement Pack for Windows CE Embedded Toolkit for Visual C++ 5.0
  • Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder, versions 2.11, 2.12
  • Microsoft Windows CE versions 2.0, 3.0 Professional Edition for the Handheld PC

SYMPTOMS

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server service in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 has a new parameter (SwitchedNetworkFlag) that will allow the client's default gateway to be set to its own IP address. This is to request that clients use Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) (which is used for finding destination addresses) for all addresses on the local subnet. Windows CE does not function correctly in this environment and may not be able to communicate with other computers on the network.

CAUSE

This feature of the Windows NT Server DHCP server service was added after the Windows CE DHCP client code was complete, and therefore was not considered in the design of the Windows CE DHCP support.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
