Understanding MTS Transactions

[This product will work only on Windows NT 4.0 versions and earlier. For Windows 2000 and later, see COM+ (Component Services).]

Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) enables you to easily use, monitor, and administer distributed transactions in your applications. A distributed transaction is a transaction involving updates to transaction-protected resources on more than one system. The MTS transaction manager, Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC), provides a distributed transaction facility for Windows NT® and Windows® 98 systems.

MS DTC also makes it possible to update two or more transaction-protected resources on a single system. For example, MS DTC permits a Microsoft SQL Server database, a Microsoft Message Queue Server message queue, and an Oracle database to be updated under the control of a single transaction.
