Name resolution is the process of translating a name into some object or information that the name represents.

naming context (NC)
A naming context (also called a directory partition) is a contiguous Active Directory™ subtree that is replicated on one or more Windows 2000 domain controllers (DCs) in a forest. See directory partition.
