Installing DSMN from a CD-ROM

DSMN is shipped as a separate Microsoft product and is included on the compact disc titled Services for NetWare.

Û To install DSMN on a Windows NT Server 4.0 computer from a CD-ROM

1. Double-click My Computer.

2. Double-click Control Panel.

3. Double-click Network.

4. Click the Services tab, and then click Add.

5. Click Have Disk even if Directory Service Manager for NetWare appears in the Network Service list.

6. Insert the Services for NetWare CD in the CD-ROM drive.

7. Type the path, and then click OK.

The path is drive:\DSMN\NT40\processor, where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive and processor is the server's processor type. For example, type d:\dsmn\nt40\i386 to install on an x86-based computer with a CD-ROM drive at drive D. The possible values for processor are i386, MIPS, ALPHA, and PPC.

8. Select Directory Service Manager for NetWare, and then click OK.

9. In both the Password and Confirm Password boxes, type a password for the DSMN user account, and then click OK.

This account is used by the service to perform tasks.

When you restart the computer, the DSMN service will automatically start. To configure how this service starts and stops, use the Services option in Control Panel or the net start mssync and net stop mssync commands.

Note

On computers that have multiple network cards and that run DSMN but not File and Print Services for NetWare, the computer itself must have a network number defined for the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport running on the Windows NT PDC. This network number is a NetWare concept (see your NetWare documentation), and the number you define must be unique. It must be different from all other network numbers on your NetWare network. To configure a network number, go to Control Panel, click Network, click Protocols, click NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport, and then type your network number in the Internal Network Number box.
