Connecting Directly to the Internet

Before the restructuring of the Internet telecommunications infrastructure in the United States during 1995, connecting directly to the Internet generally meant acquiring a dedicated, rather than dial-up, connection to the Internet. Today, this term may also refer to obtaining Internet connectivity services directly from an NSP at the backbone layer of the Internet telecommunications infrastructure.
