Understanding Address and Name Resolution

TCP\IP under Windows NT allows a computer to communicate over a network with another computer by using any of the following:

• IP address
• Host name
• NetBIOS name

If you get the correct response when using ping with an IP address but an incorrect response when using ping with the host name or NetBIOS name, you have a name resolution problem. The following sections describe the processes that occur when using a host name or a NetBIOS name, instead of an IP address, to connect with hosts on a TCP/IP network.
