Microsoft Office Server Extensions (OSE) is installed on a Web site on a Web server with one of the following configurations:
– or –
OSE includes Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions, and OSE Setup automatically installs or upgrades FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web site.
A Web site that has FrontPage Server Extensions installed is called a FrontPage-extended web. If a FrontPage-extended web also has OSE installed, it is called an OSE-extended web. IIS supports multiple Web sites on a single computer, so it is possible to have multiple FrontPage-extended webs or multiple OSE-extended webs on an IIS computer. A FrontPage-extended web can have one or more subwebs below the root web. However, OSE can be installed only on the root web.
Using the following tools, you can perform several OSE maintenance tasks to administer FrontPage Server Extensions:
Provides the complete set of FrontPage Server Extensions operations. Use Fpsrvadm from the command line or in batch files. Fpsrvadm must be run on the server.
Administers FrontPage Server Extensions on Microsoft Windows NT through a graphical user interface (GUI).
Administers FrontPage Server Extensions from a Microsoft Windows-based computer other than the computer on which the Web server is running. Remotely performs all the operations that Fpsrvadm performs.
Install and administer FrontPage Server Extensions remotely in a Web browser on any computer connected to the Internet. The forms are copied to your Web server during OSE Setup.
You can create a new FrontPage-extended web, change user permissions, and do other administrative tasks when you do not have local access to the Web server on which you have installed OSE.
You can use FrontPage Server Extensions HTML Administration Forms, and the command-line utility Fpremadm to administer FrontPage Server Extensions remotely from any computer connected to your intranet or the Internet. However, remote administration can be less secure than direct administration.
The following table identifies the administrative tasks you can perform on an OSE-extended Web, and the FrontPage Server Extensions tools to use for each task.
