We've just introduced the theme of scriptlet compatibility, and realized that, in a possible upcoming scenario, scriptlets might be eligible for the accolade of the best cross-platform and cross-browser Web components.
At the moment, however, scriptlets are supported only by IE4 and are commonly associated with the Windows 9x operating systems. So what about other platforms? This could give us an idea of the audience such a technology could gain.
We all agree that making COM/DCOM compatible with Unix, or wherever, is a huge task. Instead, it sounds much more doable to make an application run outside the Windows platforms.
This is exactly what's going on with IE4. IE4, in fact, is expected to support DHTML and scriptlets on Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 3.1, Unix, Macintosh, and even Windows CE. So scriptlets and DHTML are not tied to Windows in any way.
On the other hand, at the moment (repeat, at the moment) scriptlets and DHTML are strictly tied to IE4 as the browser. However, it's quite likely that this will change soon.
