It is practical to represent the semantics of UML model elements according to the formalisms of UML itself — the process is known as metamodeling. However, this type of recursive representation runs into the 'chicken and egg' problem, especially when you're learning. This is why it is advisable at first to consider all the diagrams in this chapter as examples of the notation, rather than looking for a deep understanding. With this in mind, the metamodel diagrams show simplified views in order to make the text accessible to the largest number of readers possible.
