Chapter One The 32-Bit Windows 98 Environment

If you’re reading this book, the reasonable assumption is that you’re interested in creating applications for Windows 98. Before you can design and implement applications, you need to understand the environment where your applications will operate and the requirements necessary to support that environment. Toward this objective, this chapter describes the environment created by the Windows 98 operating system.

As a Windows application developer, you probably would like your applications to run under several Windows platforms. This chapter also provides an overview of the differences between Windows 98 and Windows NT, as well as between Windows 98 and Windows 95, from a programmer’s perspective.

If you are planning to run Windows 98 along with another operating system, such as Windows NT, you need to make some special provisions. The final section of this chapter explains how to install a dual-boot system.
